Welcome to MWSM Summer 2010!
Our Summer School is a 6-week afternoon program, located at school building in the Historic District of Framingham. It starts the week of July 5, 2010 and ends on August 13, 2010. Bring your children after a day at camp or at home for some fun and learning. They will have a good time learning and playing.. We look forward to teaching your children over the Summer!
Who Can Benefit From Our Summer Program?
- The program is intended for any students
who recently joined the school and wish to catch up with their peers. The
students taking MWSM classes during the summer may
be able to skip the beginner level or
jump on to a higher level next year.
- For Students looking
for more unusual math problems
and exposure to more advanced topics may
wish to try our Summer Math Challenge classes. These
classes will also offer exposure to
problems from math competitions all over the world.
- For students preparing to take the SAT,
Summer School is a great way to practice and improve
their scores without the distraction and pressure from
activities during the school year. Summer School SAT
preparation class will also provide opportunity for
the students who wish to more thoroughly prepare
for the John Hopkins University Center for Talented
Youth test .
- For students who feel challenged by the math
curriculum in the past academic year this
is a perfect chance to boost their confidence and
address their shortcomings in 6 short weeks.
- Those who are
new to MWSM, can try our
program without a long-term commitment
in summer and decide whether they would like to continue.

Summer School Payment Policy
- Full Summer Tuition payment is due at the time of the Application to reserve your child's seat
- If your plans change, A full refund will be provided up to 30 days before the start of the school year. If you withdraw 2 weeks before the start of Summer School, a late withdrawal fee of $100 will be retained, and the rest of the payment will be returned to you. There will be no refunds after 2 weeks before the school starts.
- There are no refunds or make-up dates for classes missed for any reason, including illness
- If you sign up after Summer School already started, your Tuition will be prorated based on the remaining lasses from the date of your registration
General Policies
- MWSM accepts all students ages 5 and up providing
they agree to abide by our rules and policies.
- Email is a preferred method of communication with
the school administration, however if you wish, you
can contact administration during the regular office
hours by phone or in person.
- All the special announcements (except weather
cancellations) are made through the email.
Please make sure you provide your current e-mail
and notify the administration of any changes, and please make sure your email is regularly monitored.
- Weather cancellations will be announced by 2 PM on
the weekdays or by 8 AM on the weekends on our web
site and as a pre-recorded message on the school’s
phone. Please check the web site or call the school. Please
do not email school administration or the teachers, as you may not get a reply in a timely manner. Please use your own discretion if the school has
not been canceled but the roads in your area are in
bad condition. As always, safety first!
- We discourage parents sitting in the classroom during
the lessons as it is disruptive to the class. If you
have a strong reason to request a sit-in, please contact
the school administration before contacting the teacher.
- We encourage parents to discuss their child’s
progress with teachers, but please limit it to the
time before or after class.
- The minimum class size at MWSM is 5 students. MWSM reserves the right to cancel any class with less than 5 students enrolled.
Discounts
-
10% - sibling discount on
the second child and 5% on each subsequent child for our
regular Math curriculum. The oldest child always
pays the full tuition, the second oldest gets the 10% tuition
discount, the third oldest child and all other children
get 5% discount. Note that discount is for
one class per child only.
No discounts are available
for SAT classes (including MATH) and
all non-math classes.
- We offer a multi-class tuition discount for summer classes.
- We offer a $50 referral bonus for each new referral to Summer School.
- A $100 - referral bonus will
be applied to your tuition for each newly referred student
who sign-up for any Math; Algebra or Geometry class for the 2010-2011 school year and
pay their Registration fee. (Note: this supersedes an earlier $50 referral discount. The new discount amount is effective for all new registrations starting March 1, 2010.).
- If the new family signs up to both Summer and 2010-2011 programs, the larger of the two referral bonuses apply.
- Please note that we cannot honor referral bonuses if the referred family did not list you as the source of their referral. Please remind families you refer to remember to note your name on the application.
Pick-up and Drop-Off Policy
- For the safety of your children lease bring your children to class and stay with them until the class starts. MWSM is not responsible for children dropped off before the class. At the end of the class, please come to the reception area to pick up your child. Children will not be allowed to leave the building without their parent.
- If you arrange a carpool of have someone else pick up your child, please notify us in writing.
- Students must be picked up promptly after the end
of their class. If you are late, our teachers
or office staff will stay with your child until the
child is picked up. However, $1/min charge is applied
to the student’s account for every min after
the courtesy period of the first 5 min of delayed pickup.

Summer Enrollment
To Enroll in Summer School, please check out our schedule and class descriptions, fill out the Summer Application, and return it to the Office in person or by US Mail along with the payment of Summer Tuition Fee in full. If you are new to MWSM, please call or email the office to schedule a Placement Test. If you are continuing student, please see the Summer School FAQ to determine the class to sign up, or consult your teacher or the office if in doubt.

Summer School FAQ
Q: My child is new to MWSM. Which
class should I sign him up?
A: Please contact info@metrowestschool.com to
schedule a placement test.
Q: What is the relationship between MWSM Summer program classes and regular classes?
A: As a rule of thumb, a MWSM summer math class is an accelerated overview of the corresponding regular class.
Q: My child is currently
a MWSM student, but we joined late and she is struggling
a bit. Which class should I sign her up for?
A: You should sign
her up for the same class as she is taking right now. For
example, if she is is Level 2 now at MWSM, you should sign her
up for summer Level 2 class.
Q: My child
is doing very well at MWSM. Will she still benefit
from Summer School?
A: If your child
does not want to skip a level and does not need to catch
up on any material, we recommend
signing up for the appropriate Math Challenge class.
Q: My child is new to MWSM. Can she
still join Math Challenge class?
A: Please contact us to schedule
a placement test.
Q: What is the fee for the Summer
School?

Q: What is the
time commitment for Summer School?
A: All regular Math classes meet twice a week for 6 weeks..
Q: I am leaving on vacation in the middle of the Summer School. Can I pay a pro-rated fee?
A: No, according to our Payment Policy, you commit to the entire program fee. However, we will provide you with homework and class assignment for the time you are away, so that your child can keep up with the program. Many of our families have successfully used this option over the years. |

This is a quick 6-class introduction to our year-long Kids and Numbers. Recommended for students entering Level 1 class in the Fall, or as a stand-alone summer enrichment course. Students compare, combine, analyze, continue the pattern, group, explore the number line, look for the missing number (next year we will call it an equation with a variable). |

It is recommended a) as a standalone summer enrichment program for students entering 1st or 2nd grade in their regular schools, b) for those who joined a Level 1 class at MWSM late in the year and need to review the Level 1 material, and c) for new students entering Level 2 class at MWSM in the Fall. The class starts with basic operations, shapes and their perimeters. Students solve puzzles, and get their get first introduction to variables and word problems - all while having lots of fun. |

It is recommended a) as a standalone summer enrichment program for students entering 2nd or 3rd grade in regular schools, b) for those who joined a MWSM Level 2 class late in the year and need to review the Level 2 material, c) for new students entering Level 3 class at MWSM in the Fall. This class may also be considered for MWSM Level 1 students desiring to skip level 2 class and enter a Level 3 class in the Fall. The emphasis of the class is on development of abstract and critical thinking. Topics include Multiplication and Division, Order of Operations, Area and Perimeter. Students are introduced to equations and variables via games with balance scales, magic squares, etc. First introduction to functions through the "Guess my rule" games. |

Students get their first introduction to Laws of Arithmetic and Order of Operations, find Area and Perimeter of compound shapes. More Functions, Equations, Logical problems, and word problems. First Introduction to fractions. |

The motto of the class “Don't do it hard – do it smart!” using laws of arithmetic. Word problems, equations, algebraic transformations and functions. Triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, find their area and perimeter. Fractions and still more logic problems. |

This class is intended for 6-7th graders seeking a boost in their math skills and planning to take a Honors class in the fall at their regular schools. It is also recommended for those MWSM students who joined Level 6 Algebra late in the year and need to strengthen their footing in dramatically important Pre-Algebra topics before entering the Level 7 class in the Fall. It is also highly recommended for new students who are planning to join MWSM Level 7 class in the Fall. The course covers Pre-Algebra topics such as Ratios, Proportions, Percents and Absolute values. Emphasis on word problems and equations. Fluency in these topics is crucial for success at SAT in the future. |
Algebra 1

This class is intended for 7th graders who are looking to take Algebra 1 in the fall, as well as for 8th or 9th graders with gaps in their Algebra 1 knowledge. New students who are looking to join MWSM Algebra Level 8 class in the Fall are encouraged to take this class. The class covers Linear Equations, Word problems, Algebraic Expressions, Exponents and basic operations with Polynomials. |

This is the second course in Algebra covering advanced topics including Review of Polynomials, Special Products and Quadratic Equations. It will be helpful for new students entering Algebra 9 class at MWSM in the Fall, as well as for 8th and 9th graders needing some help in Algebra 2 topics in their regular schools. |

This is the introductory course in Geometry covering the notion angles, parallel lines, triangles and polygons. It is highly recommended for MWSM students who are going into a Level 7 class at MWSM in the Fall but did not take Geometry Level 6. It is also recommended to new MWSM students planning to enter a Level 8 Geometry class. Even if you do not plan to join MWSM in the Fall, try this class to get ahead of the curve in the High School Geometry and enjoy the stress less way to get ready for about 40% of SAT I questions. |

This course will help High School Geometry students to survive one of the most difficult courses of the High School curriculum. The course covers Congruent and Similar triangles & quadrilaterals, Geometric inequalities, Areas of plane figures and Area/Volume of Solids. This course requires having taken Geometry I as a pre-requisite. MWSM going into Level 9 classes but having taken Geometry 7 only will benefit from this class, as it will allow them to join Geometry Level 9 in the Fall. The topics covered in this course are heavily used in SAT. |

In addition to just being lots of fun, this class will help students stay in shape for Math Competitions that we offer during the year by exposing them to math problems from competitions and challenges around the world. Placement test or MWSM teacher recommendation may be required to qualify for this class. The class is offered at two levels: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. |

Creative Writing Class gives elementary and middle school students an opportunity to explore their own talents as writers of fiction and non-fiction, poets, and journalists. Students are introduced to a variety of writing techniques, genres and styles. In this class we view writing as an exercise in self-expression and making art, rather than a necessary evil of everyday routine. The class is offered at two levels: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. |

This class is intended for those students who plan to take SAT I in the Fall. Offered as a twice-a-week intense 3-hour session for 6 weeks, it will give participants a chance to practice real SAT tests and get intensive help in the areas of math needed to succeed in this important milestone on the Road to College. Take it together with SAT English prep class to prepare for all aspects of the SAT test, and take advantage of the multi-course discount. |

| Great Books |

Beyond the book report/ reading great books, discussing and writing about them. The course targets high ability readers and booklovers in grades 5-7. Students will read a novel before the class starts and come in having thought about certain questions. Using Socratic discussion model, and historical source material, we will each form our own opinions about the ideas and themes in the book. We will hold debates, and write about our points of view. We will create both formal and creative written responses to the book. Essays will be of the kind written in Honors and AP High School English classes. At the end, we will publish a book of class responses and recommendations for the other Metrowest School members. |
