Who Can Benefit From Our Summer Program?
- The program is intended for any students
who recently joined the school and wish to catch up with their peers. The
students taking MWSM classes during the summer may
be able to skip the beginner level or
jump to a higher level next year.
- Students looking
for more unusual math problems
and exposure to more advanced topics may
wish to try our Summer Math Challenge classes. These
classes will also offer exposure to
problems from math competitions all over the world.
- For students preparing to take the SAT,
summer school is a great way to practice and improve
their scores without the distraction and pressure of
activities during the school year. Summer school SAT
preparation class will also provide opportunity for
the students who wish to prepare more thoroughly
for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented
Youth test.
- For students who feel challenged by the math
curriculum in the past academic year this
is a perfect chance to boost their confidence and
address their shortcomings in 6 short weeks.
- Those who are
new to MWSM, can try our
program in summer without a long-term commitment and decide whether they would like to continue.

This class provides an accelerated overview of the year-long entry-level Level 1 class. It is recommended a) as a stand alone summer enrichment program for students entering 1st or 2nd grade in their regular schools, b) for those who joined a Level 1 class at MWSM late in the year and need to review the Level 1 material, and c) for new students entering Level 2 at MWSM in the fall. The class starts with basic operations, and shapes and their perimeters. Students solve puzzles, and get their first introduction to variables and word problems—all while having lots of fun. |
| Level 2 |
This class provides an accelerated overview of the year-long entry-level Level 2 class. It is recommended a) as a stand - alone summer enrichment program for students entering 2nd or 3rd grade in regular schools, b) for those who joined a MWSM Level 2 class late in the year and need to review the Level 2 material, and c) for new students entering Level 3 at MWSM in the fall. This class may also be considered for MWSM Level 1 students desiring to skip Level 2 and enter a Level 3 in the Fall. The emphasis of the class is on development of abstract and critical thinking. Topics include multiplication and division, order of operations, area and perimeter. Students are introduced to equations and variables via games with balance scales, magic squares, etc. They first encounter functions through the "guess my rule" games. |

It is recommended a) as a stand - alone summer enrichment program for students entering 3rd or 4th grade in regular schools, b) for those who joined a MWSM Level 3 class late in the year and need to review the Level 3 material, and c) for new students entering Level 4 class at MWSM in the Fall. This class may also be considered for MWSM Level 2 students desiring to skip Level 3 and enter Level 4 in the Fall. Students get their first introduction to laws of arithmetic and order of operations, and learn to find area and perimeter of compound shapes. Also covered: more functions, equations, logical problems, and word problems, and first Introduction to fractions. |
| Level 4 |
This class provides an accelerated overview of the year-long entry-level Level 4 class. It is recommended a) as a standalone summer enrichment program for students entering 4th or 5th grade in regular schools, b) for those who joined a MWSM Level 4 class late in the year and need to review the Level 4 material, and c) for new students entering Level 5 at MWSM in the Fall. The motto of the class is—“Don't do it hard – do it smart!” using laws of arithmetic. Other topics include word problems, equations, algebraic transformations and functions, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, and their areas and perimeters; fractions and still more logic problems. |

This class provides an accelerated overview of the year-long entry-level Level 5 class. It is recommended a) as a standalone summer enrichment program for students entering 5th or 6th grade in regular schools, b) for those who joined a MWSM Level 5 class late in the year and need to review the Level 5 material, and c) for new students entering Level 6 at MWSM in the Fall. Students will progress from “guess and check” to formal translation to an equation. They will also cover elementary distance, time, and rate problems; the notion of divisibility and divisibility rules; logical problems; and some elements of geometry. |
Pre- Algebra
(Gr. 6-8) |
This class is intended for 6-7th graders seeking a boost in their math skills and planning to take an honors class in the fall at their regular schools. It is also recommended for those MWSM students who joined Level 6 Algebra late in the year and need to strengthen their footing in dramatically important pre-algebra topics before entering Level 7 in the fall. It is also highly recommended for new students who are planning to join MWSM Level 7 in the fall. The course covers pre-algebra topics such as ratios, proportions, percents, and absolute values, with an emphasis on word problems and equations. Fluency in these topics is crucial for success in the SAT in the future. |
Algebra 1
(Gr. 7-9) |
This class is intended for 7th graders who are looking to take Algebra 1 in the fall, as well as for 8th or 9th graders with gaps in their Algebra 1 knowledge. New students who are looking to join MWSM Algebra Level 8 in the fall are encouraged to take this class. The class covers linear equations, word problems, algebraic expressions, exponents, and basic operations with polynomials. |
Algebra 2
(Gr.8-10) |
This second course in algebra covers advanced topics including review of polynomials, special products, and quadratic equations. This class will be helpful for new students entering Algebra 9 at MWSM in the fall, as well as for 8th and 9th graders needing some help in Algebra 2 topics in their regular schools. |

It is highly recommended for MWSM students who are going into Level 7 at MWSM in the fall but who did not take Geometry Level 6. It is also recommended for new MWSM students planning to enter Level 8 Geometry. Even students who do not plan to join MWSM in the fall, will benefit from this class to get ahead of the curve in high school geometry and enjoy a low–stress way to prepare for about 40% of the math SAT I questions. |
Geometry 2
(Gr. 8-10) |
This course will help high school geometry students survive one of the most difficult courses of the high school curriculum. This course covers congruent and similar triangles and quadrilaterals, geometric inequalities, areas of plane figures, and area/volume of solids. This course requires having taken Geometry I as a pre-requisite. MWSM students going into Level 9 who have taken Geometry 7 only will benefit from this class, as it will allow them to join Geometry Level 9 (Geometry section of Pre-Calculus 1) in the fall. The topics covered in this course are heavily used in SAT. |

from summer school?
A: If your child
does not want to skip a level and does not need to catch
up on any material, we recommend
signing up for the appropriate Math Challenge class.
