Math Programs

Mathematics for Grades K-12
MWSM offers top-quality instruction in Mathematics for children grades K-12. We accept children of all levels. Once admitted, we arrange classes by level, according to the placement tests initially, and subsequently based on the results of our regular assessments. We help those who struggle with Math feel more confident in their abilities and more comfortable in their regular school. Those who were "OK" in Math but considered it rather boring, we hope will find out that Math is exciting and beautiful. We will give them a chance to excel, to try a taste of logic puzzles, math competitions and in general intellectual fun. Those who are doing well in Math class and believe that they do not need additional training, will be challenged to their capacity and will be given a chance to shine in National Competitions,

Math Challenge

Math Challenge Class is offered as a 10 session program in Spring, or as a 12 session program in Summer. Spring 2010 Math Challenge is offered at two levels: 3-5th graders and 6-8th graders.  In summer, we offer Math Challenge 2-3 (meets once a week), Math Challenge 4-5 (meets twice a week) and Math Challenge 6-8 (meets twice a week). This class provides an opportunity to cover a number of advanced topics for which there is usually no time in the mainstream curriculum.  In addition, the class offers a variety of unusual problems, including those drawn from two decades of math competitions all over the world.  The class content is developed new for each year and each session to make sure students can taken it in consequent years if desired.

Johns Hopkins CTY tests (SAT) Preparation

MWSM offers preparation to the SAT Test given annually as part of admission criteria to Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) admissions. Much of the preparation for JHU CTY occurs within our standard program, and we expect that many of the student who have been with us for several years are in good shape to succeed in this test. We also offer a series of workshops in the fall-winter prior to the January SAT test deadline. We believe that both our long-term students, and especially those who joined us more recently benefit from these workshops a lot. Information about these workshops is usually posted on this page at the beginning of the school year in September-October time frame.

Summer SAT preparation class would be a great help for those students who are considering applying to JHU CTY next January. We highly recommend taking advantage of this opportunity to strengthen your SAT taking skills without the stress and the load of extra work during the school year.

Have your child try one of our classes free of charge and experience the MWSM difference!

NEW: Great Books

Beyond the book report... This class for advanced readers in grades 5-7. Students will read a novel before the class and come in having thought about certain questions.  Using Socratic discussion model, and historical source material, we will form our own opinions about the ideas and themes in the book.  We will hold debates, and write about our points of view.  We will create both formal and creative written responses to the book.  Essays will be of the kind written in Honors and AP High School English classes.  At the end, we will publish a book of class responses and recommendations for the other Metrowest  School members.

Creative Writing

This popular class gives students the opportunity to explore their own talents as writers of fiction and non-fiction, poets, and journalists. Students are introduced to a variety of writing techniques, genres and styles. In this class we view writing as an exercise in self-expression and making art, rather than a necessary evil of everyday routine. We offer this class for students in grades 3-5 and 6-9.
