About MOEMS
MOEMS (Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools)
is a national contest that has been in existence since 1977.
Its goals, as stated on www.moems.org website are: (1) to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for Mathematics; (2) to introduce important Mathematical concepts (3) to teach major strategies for problem solving; (4) to develop Mathematical flexibility in solving problems; (5) to strengthen Mathematical intuition; to foster Mathematical creativity and ingenuity; (6) to provide for the satisfaction, joy, and thrill of meeting
challenges.
The contests are administered 5 times a year in the November – March
timeframe at participating schools all over the country. Cumulative awards based on all 5 contests are awarded nationally
by MOEMS after the last contest of the year. It is therefore
critical that participating team members attend as many of
the 5 contests as possible in order to maximize their chance
of an award.
MOEMS is administered at two levels: Elementary Division (grades 4-6) and Middle School Division (grades 7-8)

2008-2009 MOEMS Winners
A note from Dr.Charny, MWSM Director
and the Team Coach:
I am pleased to share with you the final MOEMS results of
the year.
Our team as a whole scored 167 points, which puts us in the top
10% of all teams in the US and internationally (this
is THE top team scoring). The cutoff score for the team to
be placed in this top category is 156 points.
Each individual child on the team did very well, and I commend
each and every one of them - and especially our very youngest
participants! Take a look at some of our 3rd gradres who
ranked in the first 50% and some of whom almost made the
silver! Just see what they do next year - or when they get
to the 6th grade... And our 4th-gradres did magnificently
as well.
Finally, it should be noted that some of our participants
did not attend all 5 contests, and hence did not score as
high as they would have otherwise. Next year then...
